SafeCheck® Advanced Food Safety (Handler) Certification – Provincial Approvals & Training Requirements (Accreditation)

Canadian Food Safety has offered Food Handler Certification to Canadians since 2000. Our SafeCheck Advanced Food Safety Certificate course meets the requirements of all Provinces across Canada!

  • Ontario – Approved 2015-07-17, Online & Classroom Based

    • Every operator of a food service premise shall ensure that there is at least one food handler or supervisor on the premise who has completed food handler training during every hour in which the premise is operating.
  • British Columbia – Approved 2017-05-08, Online & Classroom Based

    • Every operator of a food business must hold a recognized food safety training certificate.
    • If operator is absent from the premises, at least one employee that has approved valid food safety certification must be present.
  • Alberta – Approved 2015-05-21, Online & Classroom Based

    • At least one person with an approved food safety certificate. The trained person may be absent when 5 or fewer food handlers, including wait staff, are working on the premises.
    • At least one person with an approved food safety certificate present when 6 or more food handlers, including wait staff, are working on the premises.
  • Quebec – Approved 2019-01-09, Online & Classroom Based

    • The operator of a food establishment is required to have Food Establishment Manager training before applying for a business licence.
    • One employee or 10% of the operator’s workforce is required to have food handler training approved by MAPAQ.
    • The operator is required to keep a records of training certificates for all current and previous staff who have worked in the last 12-months.
  • Saskatchewan – Approved 2017-05-10, Online & Classroom Based

    • An operator of a public eating establishment must ensure that a person who has successfully completed a food safety course that is approved by the local authority is working in the public eating establishment at all times when food is being prepared and served.
  • Manitoba – Approved 2017-04-25, Online & Classroom Based

    • In accordance with the City of Winnipeg Food Service Bylaw: No person shall operate a food service establishment unless the person in charge has successfully completed the Certified Food Handler Training program.
    • Food Service Establishments with less than 5 Food Handlers must have a person on staff who has successfully completed the Certified Food Handler Training program.
    • Food Service Establishments with more than 5 Food Handlers working at any one time must have a person who has successfully completed the Certified Food Handler Training Program on duty at all times.
  • New Brunswick – Approved 2017-07-07, Online & Classroom Based

    • The licensee who operates a Class 4 food premises shall ensure that there is at least one person present at all times in the area of a food premises where food is being prepared who holds a certificate confirming his or her successful completion of an approved food handling program.
  • Nova Scotia – Approved 2017-05-05, Online & Classroom Based

    • At least one person per shift must have an approved food safety training course. It is strongly recommend that all people on the job have this training.
  • Prince Edward Island – Approved 2017-04-25, Online & Classroom Based

    • The license holder for any PEI licensed food premises serving food is required to have successfully completed an approved food safety training program. In the license holder’s absence, at least one employee who is present in the food preparation area is required to have successfully completed an approved food safety training program.
  • Newfoundland and Labrador – Approved 2020-02-01, Online & Classroom Based

    • On May 1, 2020, a change to the Food Premises Regulations took effect. The change requires owners/operators of certain types of food premises to have at least one employee who has current food safety training to be present in the food premises while it is in operation.
  • Northwest Territories – Approved 2013-11-25, Online & Classroom Based

    • An operator of a permanent food establishment shall ensure that at least one operator or food establishment worker who has completed an acceptable food safety program is present in the food establishment during its hours of operation.
  • Nunavut – Online & Classroom Based

    • While not required by legislation, Food Handler Certification is strongly recommended for all staff preparing, handling and serving food.

  • Yukon – Online & Classroom Based

    • While not required by legislation, Food Handler Certification is strongly recommended for all staff preparing, handling and serving food.
